Genus:  Varanus

Description:  Lace Monitors are large, very strong lizards with long necks & long muscular tails.  They have well developed legs with 5 toes with large claws. Lace Monitors can grow to 2.1 metres long.

Distribution:  These lizards live forested areas.  They are arboreal but forage on the ground.  They will climb trees when disturbed.

Comments:  I encountered a 2 metre Lace Monitor on the eastern slopes of Mt Jenolan.
