Maps: LPI Brisbane SG5615 GR: 425 233 Track Notes: Comments South Stradbroke Island is a narrow sand island just south east from Brisbane. It is about 500 metres from the mainland, separated by the Broadwater to the south and Tipplers Passage to the north. Until 1898 South Stradbroke Island was part of what is now called North Stradbroke Island. South Stradbroke Island has been home to Aborigines for 1000s of years. Ancient middens and other evidence like shield trees can be found on the island. Most of the island is now a conservation reserve but once it was mined for sand, grazed by cattle & a site for oyster leases. South Stradbroke Island is home to a number of very rare birds, some travelling huge distances to get there. Much of the island is still regenerating. There are many interesting walks along the sand dunes, through the mangroves or in the bush.
